The foundation of the Royale is our proprietary “fin” shaped rand designed to make maximum contact with the rim and resisting implosion to the very end. In addition to the rand shape, we also place two sticky rubber patches under the deck on the sides to provide additional implosion resistance. We also extended the deck neoprene 2″ past the rand  to offer unsurpassed dryness on a variety of rim shapes. In the high wear areas we use the most expensive and strongest 4-way stretch kevlar we could find (the red material around the front), and all of the seams are glued, taped and stitched. We also have studied dozens and dozens of the most popular rims to dial in a fit that will accommodate a very wide range of boats. Does every paddler need an expensive whitewater spray skirt designed to survive the stoutest of drops? No, of course not. But for those of you who do, we think you’ll find the Royale to be an essential piece of paddling gear.

Size Chart

The most accurate measurement for skirt fit is the circumference of your rim taken around the outside edge of your cockpit rim. Most common rim circumferences can be found at SkirtFit.com. If your boat is not listed, you can measure it with a fabric measuring tape. If you don’t have a fabric tape, use a piece of string, mark it, and then measure the string. If you’re feeling helpful, submit the measurement to skirtfit. It’s a great website that’s helping all skirt manufacturers.

***IMPORTANT***
Because boat manufacturers are generally making rims bigger and bigger, we have had to adjust our deck sizes. We know. It’s a headache. But what can we do? Anyway. Our 2015 skirts have a light gray deck. These skirts will have a new fit chart- see below. Our older skirts have either a black or blue deck. They have a different, smaller fit- also listed below. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us.

More tips:

  • If your rim is in-between sizes, tighter will be drier, but harder to put on. If you are running class IV whitewater, we typically recommend tighter.
  • Bungee skirts tend to be easier to get on and drier, but implode easier. Rand skirts tend to be harder to put on, but are much more implosion-proof
  • If you paddle a Pyranha Burn or Everest, we recommend a rand skirt.
  • Proper skirt fit can be a process of trial and error. Have patience- we will too. Feel to call us with any questions. 814-395-9191

I have owned 4 different IR rand decks and they have only gotten better (and more colourful). The new Royale deck not only looks the bomb it is also nearly impossible to pop. When I went to Norway in 2013 5 of the 7 swims we had were due to decks popping on drops and people got themselves into some sticky situations as a result. Suffice it to say my IR deck didn’t pop once and since then all of the people I was with have invested in an IR rand deck. Granted rand isn’t for everyone, but if you’re pushing your limits on anything grade 4+ (where having a deck pop could cost you dearly) buying an IR rand deck is a small price to pay.

The royal deck also has great attention to detail, such as the colourful and tactile grab handle ( a great improvement on the 2014 version).

I’m sold. My review may be slightly bias due to my old deck being a 20 yr old bungee play boater, that leaked like a sieve and popped if you sneezed, but nevertheless my point stands! Being used to a bungee skirt, I did noticed was the little extra time it took to put on the boat, so if you are into the whole Le Mans style, mass start races, maybe you should consider a bungee skirt (like the klingon). On the plus side, it gives a little more composure time to regret saying “I’ll run it!” first! When you do run it, it will be with confidence in your deck.
I paddle a tuna and went with the XL deck size, super easy fit, despite the cockpit being very wide! I’m informed that the Large also does the job, maybe useful if you are trying to a deck that will fit a number of cockpits?
And if like me you are not blessed with being sponsored by these guys, it’s definitely worth the extra 15 quid for some added protection on the lucky charm. Plus, it’s kevlar! Who doesn’t want a bullet proof* deck!

*as a disclaimer, it probably doesn’t stop a bullet… please don’t try this at home.

I wouldn’t use any other deck now. I’m no longer scared at the top of a rapid about my deck imploding! Running a drop or even beatering in a big hole is no problem for this deck. The kevlar also makes it super hard wearing and the ir dry lip does what it says, keeping your boat dry. This deck is worth every penny when it keeps you safe on the river.

Love this deck it always seems to impress me for playboating and creeking. Freestyle side it is dry as anything with my Arch rival dry top and also looks amazing with its logo and colours.
Creeking side of things its never imploded on me and again always dry. This is now my go to deck.
